Natural Gas Deregulation in Georgia
You Have the Power to Choose
In 1997, the Georgia General Assembly passed the Natural Gas Competition and Deregulation Act, allowing customers to choose their natural gas provider. This landmark legislation brought competition, lower prices, and better service to Georgia consumers.
How Deregulation Works
Before deregulation, Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) handled everything — from purchasing gas to delivering it to your home. Under the deregulated system, the roles are split:
- Atlanta Gas Light maintains the pipes, meters, and delivery infrastructure. They are still responsible for gas leaks and emergencies.
- Certified Natural Gas Marketers (like True Natural Gas) purchase the gas, set the commodity price, handle billing, and provide customer service.
This means you get to choose the company that sells you gas, just like you choose your cell phone provider.
Benefits of Deregulation
- Lower Prices: Competition drives marketers to offer competitive rates.
- Choice: You can switch marketers to find the best rate and service for your needs.
- Fixed Rate Plans: Marketers offer fixed-rate contracts that protect you from price spikes — something not available before deregulation.
- Better Service: Companies compete on customer service quality, not just price.
Is Switching Easy?
Yes. Switching your natural gas marketer is free once per year. There is no interruption to your gas service — the same pipes deliver the same gas. Only the company on your bill changes.
