Natural gas is viewed by many as an efficient way to supply energy to a home. People are constantly looking for ways to do so. Here are some tips to help you reduce natural gas usage, and lower your natural gas bill.
HVAC System
Is your furnace more than 15 years old? Have it replaced with one of the new ENERGY STAR-rated models. They're typically 15% more efficient vs older models.
Regular maintenance of your HVAC system can also help lower your natural gas bill. Try to clean or replace your air filters once a month. Also, have a contractor come out and inspect your HVAC system at least once a year, to make sure that there aren't any leaks. Trim grass, brush & leaves from around the outdoor unit, and keep floor vents clear of furniture and rugs.
Purchase a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can help you save money and energy. Try to set your thermostat around 78 degrees during warm months, and around 68 degrees during cold months. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60° to 70° range, you'll save up to 5% on heating costs.
Gas Water Heater
Your water heater can account for as much as 25% of the energy consumed in your home. Make sure you have an energy-efficient model and turn the maximum temperature down to 120°F to save. To reduce the loss of heat, consider purchasing a water heater insulation kit. Draining some water out of the water heater tank can also be beneficial, as draining it helps get rid of buildup at the bottom of the water heater; clearing out excess buildup allows the water heater to function in a more efficient manner. Lowering your maximum water temp can also aid in using less gas heat.
General Gas Heat Conservation Tips
Did you know that your dishwasher uses less hot water than washing dishes by hand? You’ll also conserve more energy if the dishwasher is fully loaded. During the winter, use more solar energy (and less gas heat) by letting the sun shine inside of your home, instead of covering the windows and glass doors with heavy drapery. Make sure your weather stripping and insulation are adequate. Avoid washing your clothes until you have enough for a full load. If possible, reduce the number of showers that you take every day.
